Homeless...

After we closed on our house in Arizona, we had a while until we closed on our Wyoming house, so we were homeless for 15 days.  In a way, it was nice.  No vacuuming, no dishes, and eating out.  We decided to take our time traveling to our new home and made some fun stops along the way.  After a few nights in Chandler while we finished closing on the house, we headed to Flagstaff, AZ where we spent two nights.  The first night we went to the Lowell Observatory, which was awesome.   We looked through powerful telescopes and saw some amazing images of the moon and stars.  The next morning we headed to the meteor crater site near Winslow, AZ, then drove another hour and a half to Petrified Forest National Park, which was beautiful.

At the crater they have a pretty good museum with  information about space, space craft missions, how meteors are formed, etc.  We all learned quite a bit.

A piece of the meteor that broke off and was later found.  It was mostly made up of iron and was surprisingly hard.

Here we are at the rim of the meteor crater.  It is huge!  It is 4,000 ft in diameter and 570 ft. deep.  They believe it to be 50,000 years old.  There are a few spots along the rim where you can view it.  They don't let you go down as you may not be able to get back out.  It was interesting and definitely worth the visit.

Then onto Petrified Forest National Park..

Beautiful views of the Painted Desert.

Along the drive you also see some ancient ruins.

And several spots with petroglyphs, which is fascinating.

My most favorite is the petrified wood.  I think it is amazing with all of the colors.

Another beautiful area, which my boys thought looked like giant candy corns.

Some of the petrified logs are really quite big.

Another beauty.

One of the largest petrified logs they have.

We stayed until closing then stopped at a gift shop to buy a piece of petrified wood for each of the boys before heading back to Flagstaff.

COOL!!! I know that two weeks was probably a pain, but how awesome that you got to turn it into a carefree vacation with the kids. Loved the pics - I've been to Meteor Crater, but have never seen the Painted Dessert - BEAUTIFUL!!

That first picture of the painted desert really looks like a painting. Great photography! I like your squinty-eyed boys.
