The Big Race!

Every family who has a boy in cub scouts has or will get to experience THE PINEWOOD DERBY. Beware those who haven't had the chance yet: many, many hours involved in this small, little piece of wood. I also have to admit, it is actually a lot of fun too.

Since Dallin only entered cub scouts in September, this was his first derby. About a week after we moved in our sweet neighbor brought over his kit and told us the derby was in a month. We of course were busy unpacking and such, so Tad and Dallin finally got to work on this beauty a week before the big day.

After a few visits to Hobby Lobby, we were equipped with paint, decals, sandpaper, and the book "Pinewood Derby: Speed Secrets". I'm now pretty convinced that the derby is as much for the dad's as it is for the boys!

You know this is serious when there are 24 cars racing (our ward alone) and there is this kind of display to tell you what lane you race in, who's on deck, and what the speed was of the car running down the track.

The starting line-up.

Off they go....currently tied in 2nd.

The finish line.
They had 23 heats and each car raced 6 times.
Dallin usually finished in 3rd, so his overall ranking was 11th place out of 24.

Dallin's biggest fans!

*Tad said he learned a lot from this race and knows what to do next year to make his car even faster. I'm pretty sure after doing this 12 times (3 for each boy) that we are going to be EXPERTS by the time Logan gets to racing!

Awesome car! Way to go Dallin and Tad. Our ward has an electronic track like that also, it was so fun. I love the pinewood Derby. By some stroke of luck, Ammon won 3rd place overall last year so from here on out he's bound to be disappointed!
